I plan on teaching a tarot class in the future, for sure. Tarot is something that sort of anybody can do but not everyone can do well. It comes natural to some people and others need a little guidance. And that’s totally okay ! In this blog, I’m going to give you all a little information to help you out. Or if you never grab a deck of your own, it’ll help you understand your own readings better and why I send you a picture of the cards I’ve pulled for you.

Minor Arcana
The minor arcana are what the collective of suite cards are called. There are four suits and they’re cups, pentacles, swords and wands. They tell us about the different things going on in our day to day lives. They have a host of things associates with them that help us understand what the overall tarot spread is trying to communicate with us.
Court Cards
Court cards make me think of the royal court. I’m not sure whether or not there’s an official correlation. But they include the King, Queen, Knights and Knaves or Pages. Each one has its own personality and set of expectations.
Kings
As person in the home, this often represents the father figure or head of household. They’re the most powerful and have the most responsibility. They’re typically the most stable and driven to achieve too.
Queens
The Queen represents maternal figures usually in the home or just the most mature person. This is someone who has a wealth of wisdom. They also confident in their use of that wisdom. So having a king and queen together, especially in the same suit, usually means everything is running smoothly.
Knights
This can represent a teenager or just someone who is generally reckless. It can, as an idea, represent someone who is being immature. They’re also probably moving too fast, making rash decisions. Depending on the other cards in the spread, this isn’t always a bad thing.
Knaves (Pages)
This is the youngest, most childish court card. Whereas knights can show immaturity, knaves show more of an appropriate youthfulness. It can show good potential or naivety. It can also represent you getting some kind of offer or message soon and about being a beginner.
Cups
This suit is most closely associated with our emotions and love life. The zodiac signs that represent cups are the water signs: Pisces, Cancer and Scorpio. If you’re using a regular deck of playing cards instead of the tarot, you can use hearts for cups.
If you’re using the tarot to tell time, cups can mean summertime or the span of a month or months. It’s important to pay attention to how you word your question. For example, I’m typing this September 23, 2023. If I ask when I get a new clients and I pull the 3 of cups, it could be telling me in 3 summers or in 3 months. I may want to ask what time of year or what span of time instead. Or maybe even both of those questions back to back !
A few keywords to keep in mind when you see cups: relationships, happiness, harmony, emotion, sensitivity and fulfillment.
Pentacles
Pentacles are most closely associated with money and other earthly materials. They go with the earth signs of the zodiac: Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn. If you’re using a regular deck of playing cards, you can use diamonds for pentacles.
If you’re using tarot to tell time, pentacles can mean Winter or years. So how you word your question really matters. If you ask when you’re having a baby and get the 9 of pentacles that should mean by wintertime or in 9 years. If you’re asking in the fall, the 9 could be showing in about 9 weeks when winter starts.
A few keywords to keep in mind when you see this suit: money, work, talent, stability, reputation and achievement or material realm.
Swords
Swords are most associated with the air element so remember thinking, intellect and problem solving. It goes, of course, with the air signs of the zodiac: Libra, Gemini and Aquarius. If you’re using a regular deck of playing cards, swords are spades.
Telling time with tarot is a potential that can be super helpful. If you’re asking a time related question and pull a sword it can be talking about Autumn or the span of weeks. So if you’re asking when you will be getting a job because you’re currently unemployed and you pull the knight of swords, that could mean quickly, in a couple weeks or so. There’s no number but we know that knights can represent haste.
Here’s a few keywords for swords: communication, conflict, struggle, resolution, ideas and change.
Wands
Wands are associated with the element of fire so being the Aries Alchemist I really should’ve did these first. The zodiac signs for wands are Aries, Leo and Sagittarius. Think of magic and passion both. Using a regular deck of cards, they’d be the clubs.
As you’re using tarot to tell time, just like fire moves the fastest, wands move the fastest and represent days. They also represent summer time. So if you’re asking when you’ll have some extra money to just have fun with and you pull the 6 of wands, it could be talking about 6 days or by the springtime.
Keywords to keep in mind when you pull wands: creativity, energy, enterprise, intuition, hope and potential.
